Chocolate covered pretzels are fantastically easy to eat, but you’ll enjoy extra taste and crunch when you choose Unique Pretzel Bakery’s delicious milk chocolate and dark chocolate snacks!
Unique Pretzel Bakery is a family-owned business founded in Reading, PA, during the late 1890s which has continued to grow for 120 years through six generations and counting. We are the original bakers of the famous split-open pretzel, called Unique “Splits”, the only one of their kind. This delightful crunchy pretzel was accidentally invented in the early 1950s after the dough was left to set too long and the pretzels split during baking.
Today, we bake 16 delicious varieties of pretzels that are available from our website and in stores along the East Coast, including Wegmans, Fresh Market, Whole Foods and Giant stores. They include:
- Milk Chocolate “Splits” and Dark Chocolate “Splits” – Who can pass up the wonderful culinary combination of bread, the saltiness of a hard pretzel shell, and the sweetness of chocolate?! Unique Pretzel Bakery covers our original “Splits” in the finest chocolate available to create a sweet and creamy surface with a crunchy and salty inside. Pennsylvania and Pretzels
If you’ve ever lived in or visited Pennsylvania, you know that we are the home of American pretzels. In fact, 80% of the nation’s pretzels are made here! Pretzels have been in our blood since German settlers brought the tradition here when they settled the region in the 1700s.
Chocolate covered pretzels are also thought to have originated in Europe in about 1544, when a German baker named Herr Franz Joseph Liebniz partnered up with a chocolatier in his Hamburg neighborhood to produce the mouthwatering combination we’ve been enjoying for nearly 500 years!
Although the recipe for soft pretzels may have come to America from Europe, hard pretzels are our own unique Pennsylvanian invention. The legend is that a young apprentice fell asleep while baking a batch of soft pretzels. When he awoke, the moisture from the dough had completely evaporated and he had a batch of crunchy hard pretzels.
The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Factory in Lancaster County, PA was home to America’s first commercial pretzel bakery in about 1850, but it’s Reading, PA, home to Unique Pretzel Bakery, that holds the title of Pretzel Capital of the World. An automatic pretzel twisting machine that was invented here in 1933 revolutionized the process and enabled bakers to make far more pretzels than they could make by hand.
